Common research terminology, abbreviations, and technical references for the laboratory community.
Certificate of Analysis (COA)
A document issued by a quality control laboratory that confirms the identity, purity, concentration, and other specified characteristics of a particular batch of a research compound. A COA typically includes HPLC analysis, mass spectrometry data, and other relevant analytical parameters.
Batch Tracking
A system of assigning unique identifiers to each production batch of a research compound, allowing full traceability from manufacturing through distribution. Batch tracking enables quality control, recalls if necessary, and transparency in the supply chain.
Lyophilization
A freeze-drying process used to preserve research compounds by removing water under vacuum while the material is frozen. Lyophilized compounds have extended stability and can be stored for longer periods before reconstitution.
Reconstitution
The laboratory process of dissolving a lyophilized (freeze-dried) compound in a sterile solvent, typically bacteriostatic water or sterile water, to prepare it for research applications. The volume of solvent determines the final concentration of the solution.
High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
An analytical chemistry technique used to separate, identify, and quantify components in a mixture. In the context of research compounds, HPLC is used to assess purity and confirm the identity of the compound.
Mass Spectrometry (MS)
An analytical technique that measures the mass-to-charge ratio of ions to identify and quantify molecules. MS is commonly used alongside HPLC to confirm the molecular identity of research compounds.
Bacteriostatic Water
Sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative. It is used in laboratory settings for reconstituting lyophilized compounds when multiple withdrawals from a single vial are needed, as the preservative inhibits microbial growth.
Purity
A measure of the percentage of the target compound present in a sample relative to total content including impurities. Research compounds from AllDayGLP are typically ≥98% or ≥99% pure as determined by HPLC analysis.
Storage Stability
The length of time a research compound maintains its specified quality under defined storage conditions. Lyophilized compounds generally have longer storage stability than their reconstituted counterparts.
Research Use Only (RUO)
A designation indicating that a product is intended for laboratory research purposes only and is not approved for clinical, diagnostic, therapeutic, or human or animal use. RUO products are not to be administered to humans or animals.
